Ellen Foster First Response

I have begun to read the book titled Ellen Foster. It is a book about a young girl named Ellen. She is growning up in a poor family. Her mother is depressed, sick, and lets the father verbally abuse her. The only time he doesn't say anything to the mother is when Ellen is there, so Ellen rarely leaves her mothers side. One morning Ellen woke up late and heard them in the kitchen. When Ellen arrives, she notices that her mother has over dosed on her heart medication and that her father has let her do it or maybe even pushed her into doing it. He tells her all her mother needs is rest. Ellen and her mother go lay down. Later Ellen wakes up, but her mother doesn't. They have a funeral for her and in time Ellen gets a new mom.

What I can't beliveve is the father. First off, how could no one have seen any of this and why didn't Ellen go to someone for help? I know the father would threaten them, but you need to take a chance to go find help. Secondly, why would the mother stay? Yes, she was depressed and had self- esteem issues but for the safety of yourself and your daughter, I feel like leaving would have been the better decision. Thirdly, why did no one look into the "suicide"? No one asked questions or took statements. All that was done was a funeral was arranged and condolenses were said. It seems like the only person who knew it was the father, other than Ellen, was Ellens grandmother. If i were police, I would have looked into it much deeper than they did.
